Should you hold a corporate retreat?
When was the last time you got your employees together off-campus for a corporate retreat? Statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau show the number of home-based workers tripled from 2019 to 2022. Other studies indicate that increases in remote work have led to more burnout, less communication and feelings of cohesiveness in teams, and confusion over company goals. All teams can get stale working together with the same people day after day, year after year, despite where their work is located. Work cultures can feel outdated, overly-structured, or not conducive to innovative thinking. A few days together in a new environment can often be just the thing to strengthen your team as they gain renewed understanding of each other and the company they work for. Taking the time to really listen to and learn from each other could result in your best year ever!
What can you expect to accomplish at a corporate retreat?
A good corporate retreat inspires team effectiveness through collaborating, learning, and playing together outside of the regular routine of the office.
Corporate retreats can be structured many different ways. Some companies use retreats to get busy executives out of the office for leadership and planning activities. Others use corporate retreats mostly for team building which can include creating a safe environment for honest communication and reinforcing personal bonds for a more positive work environment. The most effective corporate retreats are held at an appealing location, have clear business objectives, and include lots of team building activities, i.e. plenty of good food plus unique and fun activities that all can participate in.

Here are some ideas to get your corporate retreat plans going:
- Plan a new strategic direction for the organization and brainstorm the goals and responsibilities needed to achieve objectives.
- Perform personality assessments and learn better ways to work together.
- Review corporate results from a previous year and develop financial plans for next year.
- Collaborate on objectives for a new product or project using a multi-department approach.
- Develop new skills such as learning a new software system or how to create departmental budgets.
- Weed out ineffective programs and unnecessary expenses that cost more than they’re worth.

We’re located in Fairhope, AL about midway between both the Mobile, AL and Pensacola, FL airports. Fairhope is a relatively young town, founded in the late 1800’s by an adventurous group of mid-westerners who left home by covered wagon to experiment with a new economic theory popularized by Henry George. Today, Fairhope still attracts an eclectic population of people from all over the world and we have an outsize share of the world’s musicians, artists, and writers.
